3. Preliminary Task: Front Cover Textual Analysis
In this front cover there is a photograph of a man and he is looking directly at the camera. The camera is at a medium shot showing his head, arms and waist. He is standing up in a very positive way which can suggest he is happy and ready to learn he also has two books in his hands which could mean he is a teacher/student that is going college. The background is covered in grey/black which shows it is very formal and elegant, behind the man is the ‘College’ Masthead and in front is 8 different cover lines which are in yellow and white.
Mise-en scene
costume: His clothing is a modern casual style, with a black jacket, white shirt and a pair of jeans. This costume has been chosen very carefully so it is targeted to the target audience. The costume is smart which suits the target audience, as if he is ready to go college and learn.
Props: The character has only one prop which is a Law, Business and Society book, he is holding this in his hand. This prop shows the audience a clear understanding that these books are for College and he has these books ready for his lesson today ready to learn.
Setting: There is very little setting, however the black/grey background connotes authority and power which therefore represents the going to college you will have the right and power to study and become big in the future.
Lighting: The lighting is both high key and low key, which could represent that college and education is a daily routine from daytime day night.
NVC: His non verbal communication is also very friendly and warm. His mouth is open a little to see his teeth, he is directly looking at the camera.
Anchorage: This picture of the front cover of the magazine shows a male student with study books in his hand, the meaning behind this picture could be that all students should carry of onto College/Sixth form and be successful.
Masthead: The masthead ‘college’ is very usual; in the colour yellow it does not have any outline or shadow. Just a usual font which is in capital blocks, this connotes the college is serious and there’s no time to mess around. The name ‘College’ tells the audience that this magazine is based on college.
Dateline: The dateline in this magazine cover writes ‘summer 2009’ which connotes that the publication of this magazine is in the summer month.
Main image: The main image on this magazine cover is a male student that looks very happy and smart, and he has study books in his hand, this connotes to the audience that this magazine is got to do with college, education.
Cover-lines: The cover line that says ‘why we love blackberry’s’ this connotes that blackberry’s are also getting in our way of studying because we love them and they are very addictive. Another cover-line that was very important on this magazine cover said ‘Thank God it’s Friday’ this connotes that although you are a student study very hard you also can have fun.
Main cover-line: The main cover line that relates to the main image says ‘Dancehall’s Bright Future’ this is referring to Dancehall’s college state and how he is going to make a difference by going college and getting education.
Left third: In the left third of this magazine cover is the barcode, where they have done a mistake there should of been something for vital for sales in shops.
Barcode: The barcode is a very simple barcode which is used by retailers. Under the barcode has also got the price of the magazine which is both standard and simple.
Selling line: The selling line on this magazine cover says: ‘our exclusive guide to everything hip, hot & happening. The selling line is short, sharp and snappy which has a description for the main title of the magazine; this is usually used for the marketing point.
