14. Main Task: Audience Research

Audience Research
Well, firstly I decided to do an audience research, and the target audience I have will not be bothered filling in questionnaires. So I thought of doing it a different way, I research what kind of social networking sites my audience will use and it came up as blackberry messenger and facebook. So I set up a few questions and designed a colour scheme and typography/fonts in PhotoShop, because I thought it would be better if they see the questions visual. These are the results I came up with.

From this research I found out what my target audience would like to see on a music magazine, and from this I now decided that my music magazine will include a big and bold font that my audience has mostly choose. The colour scheme would be purple, black and white this is also what my audience mostly choose to see in my music magazine. My music magazine would also included lots of images, colours and interview/gossip of celebrities such as Rhianna, Chris brown, and Beyonce etc. I have also decided that my music magazine title would be called 'Replay' I really think this title would be the best for my target audience as they choose and liked this title the most.

Mise en sence

- Costume: You can’t really see what the woman is wearing but by the look of it, it looks like she is wearing a suit with a tie and a shirt or just something that is formal. This could connote that her clothes has been worn for an event such as a party or work. Her shirts bottom is done all the way to the top which connotes that she is really smart and organised for were ever she is going.

- Props: There are no props in the man image, however the double page spread includes too smaller images and one of the images the woman is holding a perfume close to her chest; this connotes that the woman is doing a perfume advertisement for an advert.

- Setting: The double page spread picture shows no setting as the background is just plain white this could suggest that they have done this purposely to get the main of the magazine page or advert.

- Non-verbal communication: The woman’s NVC shows that she is very confident and very positive/sure about herself, this connotes that she is working somewhere very serious that she has to take her job role seriously.

11. Main Task: Contents Page Conventions Diagram

10. Main Task: Front Cover Conventions Diagram

8. Main Task: Introduction of Brief

My name is Cihan Ozduble, I am studing at Christ the king its my first year and I am studing AS Media, AS English Language, AS Sociology and AS Psychology. This week in AS Media I was asked to create a project which will be to produce a music magazine of a front cover, contents page and a double page spread. My magazine will be focusing on one type of genre which will be about the dance genre, I choose this genre because I like listening to dupstep and hip/hop these musics are manily all got to do with dancing. In my magazine I will have a housestyle which suits the audience and to have the main housestyle carried on the other pages. I will start by researching on my target audience, and creating questionnaires, I will do this to get the best type of music magazine for my main target audience.

9. Main Task: Front Cover Textual Analysis

- Denotation: This magazine has a picture of a women looking directly at the camera, it is a mid shot showing her head, arms and a little of her waist. The background is not visible as there is nothing going on it is just a plain white background, and the photograph covers the whole page of the magazine cover. Behind the women there is the 'Vibe' Masthead, and in front of her are 6 covers-lines which are in blue, black and pink. The photographed women’s' name is in blue and her name uses the biggest font of the cover-lines. The barcode is clearly placed were it could be seen on the bottom right corner.

- Connotation:
The woman looks sexy, she might be a photographer, or she might be in a photo shot.

Mise en sence

- Lighting: The lighting in this magazine cover is high key light, as the image very bright and has no shadows or darkness.

- Costume: The women is wearing casual clothes this connotes the normal look for a women on a normal day, her costume looks like summer clothes which connotes that it is a hot day or she is on holiday. Her jeans are a bit lowing and you can see her see-through tights this could also connote that this magazine is got to do with women's 'sexy fashion.'

- Props: The women is holding a camera in her hand up close to her face, this connotes that she is going to take a picture or she loves photography/taking pictures. She also has a lot of jewellery such bracelets and a ring on both hands this connotes that the women is really interested into fashion or she has to be dressed like this for this type of magazine.

- Setting: This front cover of the magazine does not have a setting as the background is just a plain white background. This could be that they have used Photo Shop for the image and cleared out the background to suit the magazine style.

- Non-verbal communication: The women's NVC shows her mouth open this connotes that she is a very confident and beautiful women, the way she is standing with her hand holding her jean connotes that she is confident with her body and loves being photogenic.

- Anchor: The font used in this front cover magazine suit the genre of the magazine, the way they have designed and used the font the title and cover lines gives the audience a strong understanding of what type of genre the magazine will be about.

Magazine conventions

- Masthead: The 'Vibe' Masthead is not very distinctive, as it does not have a drop shadow or outline. The way the font used is effective as it is big and bold; the Masthead connotes a cool hip hop magazine.

- Dateline:
The dateline on this magazine front cover writes ‘April 2008’ which connotes that the publication of this magazine is for the month April.

- Main image: The main image on this magazine front cover is a Janet Jackson she is a successful American singer, songwriter, dancer, record producer, actress, film producer and author. She appears frequently in the magazines, epically in the Vibe magazine. She is posed in a very sexual way, she looks very confident. She is the only person on the page so she has self-centred herself with the audience, her pose, body language and clothing are all very sexually suggestive.

- Cover-lines: The cover line that says ‘Rihanna: Exposed’ this could connote that Rihanna has been exposed to something and they are purposely writing this cover-line to catch the audience’s attention and to make the audience read/buy this magazine.

- Main cover-line:
The main cover-line relates to the main image which says ‘Janet Jackson likes to watch’ this is referring to the image that it is her name and how she likes to watch, this connotes music, movies etc.

- Left third: In the left third of this magazine front cover are some cover-lines and the barcode.

- Barcode: The barcode is a very simple barcode which is used by retailers. On top of the barcode is the price of the magazine and on the left side of the barcode is the dateline these are both in standard and simple font.

- Selling line:
The selling line on this music magazine front cover says: ‘He’s free, but is he good? The untold story of Busta Rhymes. The selling line is short, sharp and snappy which catches the audience attention and making them what to ready what the untold story is.

- Website link: The website link is ‘vibe.com’ it is placed on the right side of the barcode. The website link is shortened and it is place where it is hard to been seen. The connotation of this website link is to go on the site for more information if you are interested.

- Target audience: I think the target audience is likely to be for younger people, such as teenagers and young adults both being female and male around the age of 14-21. This target audience would have a good knowledge on this character and type of music, so this will define the audience’s interest in different ways. These audiences are more likely to be still in education or working, people who have an interest in the Hip Hop wave.
